"Have you guys heard of Bombas?"

A FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

It's no secret that there are other companies out there that are doing the same thing as Sky. The Buy-One-Give-One model was made famous by Toms Shoes, and in recent years there have been a quite a few different companies that have popped up with similar missions to give.

But none of them have been linked so much to Sky as Bombas. If you haven't heard of them - Bombas is a buy-one-give-one sock company that gives back to homeless shelters. Sound familiar? Ha!! They started in New York in 2013 and were featured on Shark Tank in 2014. They've continued to grow substantially since then, exceeding $100 million in revenue for the first time in 2018. At this point, they've donated over 35 million socks. MILLION. So...yes, they're big. HUGE, really.

You might be wondering why I'm telling you all of this. I assure you it's not to try and make Sky seem tiny in comparison (though you may have already arrived at that conclusion.) I wanted to bring up this topic for awhile now, and it seemed like as good a time as any! So without further ado, here we go.

- I can't tell you the number of people who ask us if we've heard of Bombas. It's one of our most asked questions! And we don't actually mind it, because if people know about Bombas, it means that they probably get why we're donating things to homeless shelters...which brings me to my next point.

- Bombas legitimizes how big the need for socks is in the homeless community. Think about it - they've donated over 35 million socks since 2013, and it's still the number one requested item from homeless shelters. While we do view Bombas as a competitor in some aspects, we also feel like we're on their team. Our mission is the same, and we could use all the help we could get for a need this big.

- There are enough differences in our brands that we think we appeal to two different types of customers. At Sky, we want to one day be known as a premium apparel company, not just a sock company that happens to sell others things, too. Socks are the bread and butter of our company and have been since we launched, and we're so thankful for that because the need is definitely there for homeless shelters. But as we look to the future and continue to release more products other than socks , we hope to continue to transition to an overall apparel company.

In closing, though sometimes Bombas feels like the "elephant in the room", it's not something that scares us or discourages us seeing how much they continue to grow. On the contrary...it inspires us! As someone once said, "if you're the smarter person in the room, you're in the wrong room". We look up to Bombas and admire all they do for the homeless community. Maybe one day they'll be writing a similar blog about us. 😉

Thanks for sharing! Yes, I have heard of Bombas, but Sky is my favorite – as evidenced by my sock drawer that is filled with the Sky chevron. Thanks for all you are doing!
