We Crossed the Halfway Point to our 10,000 Goal

One Half Down, One Half To Go

On July 24th, 2018, we made known our ambitious goal to donate 10,000 pairs of socks. We also made known the fact that we wanted to share with those who support us what the journey is like and be fully transparent with where we are at at all times.

As of today, we have raised 5,724 pairs of socks. In Chapter #2 of the blog series, I predicted that if we crossed the halfway point by November, then I’d feel pretty confident that we would reach our goal by the end of the year. Saying that in August was easy. Saying that now with 74 days left in 2018 is a little more daunting, but there’s reason to believe.

How are we going to make it?

The big thing we have going for us is that we are on the verge of peak sock season. As I previously mentioned, of all the socks we donated last year, over half were raised in just november and december combined. So technically speaking, it seems like we are in a good place. However, 10,000 socks is significantly more than what we did last year. Meaning, in one years time, we would need to spread the word to a lot more people while hoping that those who supported last year will continue to do so.

In August, I put together a 2018 plan of attack for rest of the year. I wanted to lay out all of our social media campaigns, holiday sales, gift guides, and promotions that I think it will take for us to reach this achievement. A lot was crafted from experience of what worked last year and what fell through. But again, needing to grow the mission to many others who have never heard of Sky, was going to take some new things.

One of the big marketing pieces that we anticipate creates a widespread effect is a campaign video that we will be launching in the middle of November. The video is based around the #10k2018 campaign and is a documentary style piece. We created it in hopes that it can easily be spread to others. The message is crafted in a way to reach those who have never heard about Sky, with the intention it can be shared and spread from those who follow us -- much like the #MyPair campaign last year.

Reasons for Optimism

Some days I wake up and 10,000 seems like a huge number, and then an order from a store comes in, we tick up 2%, and it doesn’t seem like much. Anything can happen. For instance, a large retailer could decide to carry Sky socks in their store tomorrow and we would have to increase our goal overnight because 10,000 would be too small! Sometimes I don’t believe that’s too far fetched of an idea -- but maybe I’m biased ;)

This gets back to the reason behind it all -- why 10,000? The short blanket statement is that I believe in the mission of Sky, and the desperate need of socks in the homeless community is not going away anytime soon. I also believe that goals unite people. Whether you feel united by this particular campaign or not, goals bring people together in a world that’s trying to do the opposite --why not give it a shot?
